Did you know that, according to a study conducted by Cancer Research UK, nearly half the people who are diagnosed with cancer are diagnosed too late, often in a stage where treatment is fruitless?
Cancer, like many other diseases, goes through numerous stages throughout its course. If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, your oncologist will determine what stage your cancer is currently in. Knowing the stage will help them understand what treatments will work best, how far the cancer has progressed, and the different symptoms you may encounter because of it. Let’s discuss what the stages of cancer look like.
At stage 0, your body is essentially in a pre-cancerous state. Some abnormal cells have been found in your body, but they have not yet turned cancerous. At this stage, tumors have not yet formed and these abnormal cells are concentrated in one area of your body only. This stage is also often called in situ carcinoma.
At this point, cancer has formed from the abnormal cells. It’s usually small and contained in one area of your body, usually the organ, bone, or tissue it has formed in. It has not yet spread to any lymph nodes but a small tumor has formed.
During the second stage of cancer, the cancer has spread to nearby tissue and your bloodstream. The tumor has grown in size as well but the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes, which is a good thing.
If you reach stage 3 cancer, your tumor has grown in size considerably. The cancer has now spread to the lymph nodes and other vital tissues in your body. More often than not, cancer is discovered around the time it reaches stages 2 and 3, which can make it more difficult to treat than when it is found in stages 0 and 1. In addition, harsher treatments may have to be used at this stage because the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.
At stage 4, your cancer has metastasized, meaning it has spread to other organs throughout your body, traveling a great distance from where it originated. By the time the cancer has spread this far, treating it can be nearly impossible.
